Yes, but, how do I turn on DMA for DVD ROM?
I've seen a couple times "turn on DMA" so your DVD isn't jumpy, How do I do that?

I am R*ingTFM, but it's not helping...
I've been poking around looking at some of the answers people are giving, and I'm not there yet. IDE? Chipset? What are these? Do I have one? Do I want more?
Thanks

It might already be on
su
password
hdparm -d1 /dev/dvd
This will tell you if it's on or not
If it is then that's not your problem - so........
go into xine and make yourself 'master of the known universe' and that should solve the problem.

I took a look, here's what I found
CouchMaster: I ran the lines you gave me, and I got a line "hdparm - get/set harddisk parameters - v.6" then a line telling me how to use it "hdparm [option] [device]" followed by a list of options.
Option -Q "get/set DMA tagged queuing depth, if supported...":
I typed:
hdparm -Q/dev/dvd
and got a reiteration of this output.

Try again and notice the spaces
hdparm (space) -d1 (space) /dev/dvd
It must be DMA if you're already master
Now this comes from Ubuntu but it also works on SuSe so I assume it's the same for Mepis

Great, if the /dvd part doesn't work then try /cdrom

K, any other ideas?
CouchMaster: Thanks for getting me past the "command line" hurdle. I've issued that command to both /dev/dvd and what I suspected to be more accurate /dev/cdrom. However, DVD playback is still jumpy. Sound is fine in Kaffeine, but both sound and picture are jumpy in xine.

There could be several reasons for jumpy playback.
You need a decent computer and videocard.
How fast depends on the movie, I'm just quoting now since I haven't tested it:
"For playback of highly compressed video, like divX, you need at least a P4 at 1,4GHz."
There is a possibility that I don't really know what I'm talking about, but I would say you should have 512 RAM and also good drivers for your video-card - not just "generic svga".
