XFCE remaster of Mepis

Marcos, one of the very active Mepis users has created a small remaster of SimpleMepis 8 with XFCE 4.6.1 (from the community repos) both for 32 and 64 bits.

XFCE 's Mepis Main features:
Based on Mepis 8.0.06
XFCE 4.6.1 from the community repo
Mepis assistants integrated in the menus
Different software packages: thunderbird, twinkle, homebank, evince, liferea, pidgin, vlc, wine...
GDM with "Mepis" look&feel
Desktop environment with "Mepis" look&feel

You can find the torrent here:
http://linuxtracker.org/index.php?pa...ts&category=33

To install it, you have just to click on the desktop icon as with regular Mepis.

If other members want to help me to improve the remaster they are very welcome. Also if somebody wants to create his own XFCE remaster and need advice, just let me know.
Comments, feedback, ideas are always welcome.

I take that to mean that any question or comment about XFCE/MEPIS isn't thread-jacking.

I just stumbled across this thread again, & it occurs to me that this remaster might be a good choice for building a server or a VM hosting box. For me, the alternative is a Debian Stable net install. Some off the cuff comparisons ...

Some immediate plusses:
  • I know & love MEPIS. I've been using it since 2004, & it's been my primary OS since May 2005.
  • This especially includes the Assistants & other MEPIS Magic.
  • I have used XFCE before & it didn't p**s me off in the 1st 5 min. For those of you who don't know me & how little patience I have for bad s/w, this is high praise. OTOH, I can have XFCE in Debian.

Some possible minuses:
  • It will need various pkgs. removed, especially if for server use.
  • It might be easier to do a net install of Debian & add to it, rather than pare MEPIS down.
  • It, the XFCE remaster, may have an older kernel.
  • The full Debian repositories, may be easier to access from Debian than from MEPIS. -- I don't know for sure.

Just my two cent, Mepis is intended to be an easy to use desktop system. In my opinion, a server shouldn't be running X (and therefore also no desktop environment), so the Debian netinstall with just the needed packages is the way to go.
