Won't boot

I swapped out one of my RAM sticks for a larger one, but now MEPIS won't boot all the way. I also tried putting the old one back in. It gets past the boot loader then goes to the terminal screen and stops after "Ok....Uncompressing the kernel.
audit(somenumberhere)"
It just stops there. I tried waiting a while but it still doesn't do anything. Please let me know how to fix this problem. I don't know the version but I know it uses kernel version 2.6.

You mentioned it was one of the memory sticks. I presume that there are others still in the PC. Take out the affected memory stick altogether. Does it boot?

If it works, you probably have;

a) damanged the DIMM with static electricity
b) not seated the memory stick back in the PC properly.

If I take out the "affected" memory stick then it still refuses to boot. A few thing were in my way when putting in the RAM stick. I unplugged the HD and Floppy IDE cables. I did put them right back in afterwards and made sure they were secure. If that would make any difference. I suppose if there was a problem with the HD it wouldn't even get to the point it currently does.

The other possibility is that you have a mismatch on your IDE cables.

Start by unplugging every IDE device i.e. floppy, cdrom etc and then try and boot from the hard disk.

If this works, its probably just a cabling issue.
