Weather or not to shut down at the end of the day?

As I am paranoid about security I always shut my computer donw ever night.

Here are My environmental conditions:

1. Noist Custom computer

2. Bedroom

3. whole house net work ( switch and router mounte on a rack in my basement)

4. NetGear Rp614 V3 Cable/DSL web safe router ( on top of rack in basement)

5. 24port Netgear Switch

The question:

Is it a wise idea to go to sleep and leave my Computer on judging by the aforementioned environmental conditions, or is it not recommended for risk of some hacker breaking through my router and compromising my net work security.

I leave my computer running all the time except for during thunderstorms (although I do turn my monitor and speakers off when I'm not using them). Personally, I think it's easier on the hardware to just leave the computer on as much as possible. The initial jolt that the computer gets when it's first powered on (especially when everything has been off for a long period of time) is basically the hardest you can be on it.

As far as network security goes, I don't think you have to worry too much as long as you're using a decent firewall. I run a network in my home and haven't had any problems with hackers or anything like that so far. That's just my experience though. Hope this helps.

No problem at all.

Let's see.. as far as hibernating in MEPIS, I'm not too sure. I only used it for a few months, and never really tried doing any of that kind of thing. Which version of MEPIS are you using? Is it installed on a laptop or desktop computer?

Look in synaptic package manager for the program hibernate.
This package provides a way to activate the suspend functionality in
the kernel. Currently it supports anything using the /sys/power/state
interface (including ACPI suspend and the in-kernel software
suspend), as well as Software Suspend 2 (which is available as a
separate kernel patch).

Hibernate can take care of loading and unloading modules, various
hacks needed to get some video cards to resume properly under X,
restarting networking and system services. It can be extended by
writing new "scriplets" which run at different parts of the suspend
process.
Find hibernate in synaptic like I said.
