USB Problem

I recently decied to migrate to Linux and choose Mepis to be the right OS for me. Though I have been using Knoppix since a long time without much problem (except installation of new softwares). I booted through the live cum install cd and found that my USB keyboard and USB mouse, which work perfect in windows and even in Knoppix were not responding here. As there was no way to go furthur, I had to stop using Mepis. I then tried Kubuntu and the above usb devices were detected. But some how I still wish to install Mepis as my OS. Can anyone suggest how I could use my usb devices in Mepis ?

Using the search tool here shown a few post similiar. Use the search and look through those post.
Some mention using a ps/2 keyboard.
Some mention going into the bios and changing settings. One is check Legacy USB. Some mention usb keyboard option in bios.
One even mentions unplug the keyboard a few seconds then replugin to see if it works.

Well the problem is not just of Keyboard. Its of USB.
Any devise attached to the USB ports are not being detected.
Not even the mouse.
Where ae they are working fine in Windows, knoppix and Kubuntu.

No other ideas than the ones in post #2. Maybe contact the Mepis team to see what input they have. If you get it resolved please post back.

The problem remains ! But when I used a PCI 2 USB card and used its usb ports then the same devices worked. So the usb ports from the main board are not being detected by MEPIS. It says :
/proc/bus/usb/devices - no such file or directory. To mention more, in the same bay there is a PS2 port and an IR port and non of them are working in MEPIS. Where as they work fine in Windows or Knoppix or Kubuntu.

Hard to say without seeing your system and doing a indepth anaylaze between the two distros. At least it will work with the PCI card.

Does this happen with the new "testing version" of SM 6.5 beta 5.1 ?

Which version are you using?

Something screwy going on, you could send a bug report to dev[at]mepis.org

They will need m/b, chipset etc type info.

I am using MEPIS 6.0

Another problem that I faced was that its not letting me install Yahoo Messanger or Firefox 2.0 (it has 1.5 in it). Is there any restriction in MEPIS for installing 3rd party softwares ?

Yes it works with the PCI card but a Keyboard attached to the PCI-USB does not work in any pre OS condition like GRUB or LILO or CMOS setup. So I have to keep changing the keyboard from MOBO-USB to PCI-USB and then back.

Any advise ?

It must be some type of issues with some usb devices. I can't boot the iso cd using my external usb dvd drive. I can't install Mepis until I get an internal drive.

I haven't tried the latest build yet.

Thnx.

Smile 3dmatrix/usb/MEPIS

3dmatrix you could look in synaptic. Re-install or see that you have these packages installed;
Discover1-data. This is a partial description from synaptic.
The Discover hardware detection library uses XML data files to describe
software interfaces to various ATA, PCI, PMCMIA, SCSI, and USB devices.
While the Discover library can retrieve data from anywhere on the net, it is
often convenient to have a set of Discover XML data files on one's system;
thus, this package.
Be sure that hwinfo is install or reinstall it.
hwinfo is the hardware detection tool used in SuSE Linux.

Hwinfo has shown better results than discover when
detecting mouse, keyboard and monitor.
Be sure that you have the latest libdiscover1 installed
Type usb into synaptics searchbar and you will find over a hundred usb related packages. I found 105.
