Goodness!!!

I'm writing this e-mail from my Linux system on-line at last!!!! Thank you so much for all the help!!! I went to the modem command page and copied the commands from Lawrence's letter into each space tabbing from one spot to another. I added one OK after the last CONNECT because the line was looking for a response and line following was DLP response and DIGITAL LINE DETECTED seemed to be the right command for that line. I tried it with the initialization strings that I had used earlier still in place but i got the "phone left off the receiver message...please hang up and..." so I erased the two lines of init strgs and I returned to the KPPP and clicked on connect and it all worked. I opened up the Firefox browser and came here to report my findings.

In conclusion, manual set-up in the USA requires that these modem commands get typed into place because there's no wizard adding this code.

Now I will have to explore the other options for upgrading my knowledge of the Linux.org family. This was a great education process and I truly appreciate the help I received from Lawrence on solving this problem.

Blessings to ALL and Happy Holidays,

Another note for anyone finally getting through this and solving the quest of getting on-line with Simply Mepis 6.0 and wondering how to disconnect????? Since this was a manual set-up, i.e. no wizard, details of the installation had to be learned among the way, like where's the disconnect/connect panel??? Under the kkkp configuration there's a misc. tab: you MUST "X" the boxes that read,(1) dock into panel on connect, and (2)minimize window on connect. From this action there will be an icon on the tool bar that you can right click and get a window to disconnect the computer from the internet.

Smile Another note to thread

It's almost two years and I've had to reconstruct my OS a few times since the original posting and thought to add the following to the information I learned along the way to solving the modem problem in installing Mepis 6.0. A friend of my in Denver gave me an article on using the "minicom" command line in a root terminal window to discover where the internal modem is installed on your system. I recently revisited the link and found it very helpful in quickly getting the information about the modem.

Hope this will help someone along their way:

Good luck and best wishes,
Maillo
