Well, I suppose that's one way of doing it. However, since Mepis 7 links to Debian Etch's respoitories, all you should have to do is uninstall the firefox provided by mepis and install iceweasel instead. That way, the program will be linked to Debian's security updates and you'll be able to update it through Synaptic.
