Unable to upgrade via Adept or Synaptic
Hi,
As a newcomer to Linux I do have a problem with
I have installed mepis on a triple boot machine ( XP, Mepis, Kubuntu. )
The install went with no problem except that during the install when it tried to update the packages, all that happened was an error message saying that the sites were not available. The install continued to a conclusion. I can now collect emails and browse the internet with no problem, I can also browse my home network. Adept and Synaptic will not connect to the relevant update sites, even though I have changed to UK specific sites. They just refuse to go to the internet. Does anyone have some idea why they do not work but my browsers do. This at the moment is the only problem on an otherwise very nice system.
This problem about being unable to update also happens on Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Pclinux, when installed on the hard disk.
Help would be appreciated as I have tried on some other linux sites to no avail. Thanks in advance.
(There is no firewall running to prevent access.)

Have you tried running from the command line? apt-get update as root should try to update the package list. Can you post your /etc/apt/sources.list? Have you tried using other sources (i.e. non-UK or just different UK sites)? If it's affecting all your install, it makes me think there's a sources.list problem.

Hicayman,
what kind of adsl router are you using?
If it's d-link check here, it may help.

Hi, Thanks for the replys. My ADSL router is a netgear DG632 which connects to the internet quite happily. The only problem is the update managers for some reason.
My sources list is as follows, I have been using NZ and GB and US sites, all with the same result. I used the source o matic site to get an automatically generated list
# Automatically generated sources.list
# If you get errors about missing keys, lookup the key in this file
# and run these commands (replace KEY with the key number)
# gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv KEY
# gpg --export --armor KEY | sudo apt-key add -
# Ubuntu supported packages (packages, GPG key: 437D05B5)
deb nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted
deb nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted
deb security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security main restricted
# Ubuntu community supported packages (packages, GPG key: 437D05B5)
deb nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe multiverse
deb nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates universe multiverse
deb security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security universe multiverse
I do not get any errors about missing keys, just timing out with no result. I hope this helps. (I have had to delete the url as I am not allowed to post those.)
