udev problem

I used synaptic to install Gnome. Now when I boot up, I get a message saying something to the effect of "udev 0.074-3 requires a kernel newer than 2.6.12, udev cannot start"

As a result, none of my USB stuff works. Can I just remove udev (along with Gnome, since I don't really like gnome anyway) or do I need to upgrade my kernel, or what?

you can safely remove udev and install hotplug instead

--this will most likely solve it. If it doesn't you have to get a new kernel.
