the weather report applet
Has anyone else noticed that the Weather Report tends to keep displaying a report for Morgantown, West Virginia (the default setting, for obvious reasons), and puts up a certain resistance to changing the service? I had to change it to my hometown at least three times, and restart at least once, before it cooperated; and I have no idea if it will stay that way after I log out.

For whatever reason the advice on the wiki did not work for me. Your local call letters can be entered in the files $HOME/.kde/share/config/weather_panelappletrc
and
$HOME/.kde/share/config/KWeatherServicerc

I can't get it to work anymore either. It used to work fine in older versions of Mepis.

Had the same problem yesterday. I think you need to add the location that you want first and then delete the default place of Morgantown (where ever that is).

I've tried it every way you can. After a few times, it will finally stick, but I have lost patience with it and just delete it right after that Kaquarium thing. I use Mepis because it is easy, why should I fight with something so trivial as a weather applet?

why fight it? I don't know, but I always do! Looking out a window hurts my eyes maybe? (looking at MSWindows does!)
I think that you have to add your city, and close the Setup dialogue. Then log out of KDE and in again. Then change the applet to your city. Then twirl, and dip, sidestep, sidestep, swing your partner 'round and 'round. Then delete the Morgantown location so that yours is the only one left. Then hope it worked. It has for me in the past...

I have found that the steps are these:
1) go to Configure Kweather--> Weather Service
2) remove Morgantown
3) add your city
4) click "Update all"
6) exit Configuration
6) reenter Configure Kweather
7) --> Weather Service
2) click "Update all" again
8) select your city on pull-down menu, click "OK"
That sticks for me--not elegant, but it has worked.

I wasn't able to remove the default location first and then install my location after rebooting. Instead, after adding my location, I closed it and reopened it. Then, selected it from the menu as the location I wanted to see. Then closed again, and finally opened it and removed the default location!
There are two ways to have it open, and maybe that's the source of the confusion. The 'configure' works if you add your location first, but it doesn't actually show up after you close configure. If you select it when you next open the applet, it's visible (but not the default) in the menu without 'configure,' and can be selected. Then you can open the 'configure' routine again to remove the default location. lol
Btw, this morning (before installing MEPIS) I had the radio on, channel surfing, from about 5:30am to 7:28am before I finally heard a 'weather forecast' -- and that didn't include the current temp, which was what I had wanted! So I was quite happy to see that little weather applet working when I did the install!

OH!!!
I figured it out!! I've been trying to do this for four days, and I just did it in a secon! JUST NOW as I was reading you guys's posts,by clicking on the help in the configuration window,..and just reading the instructions.Sometimes it's just that easy. I shoulda dont that first,I guess, huh?
<<<<Right click on the Weather icon in the taskbar,..go to configure,...hit Display in the left hand column,....then enable Log-In toward the bottom. Then open the dropdown menu and pick your town. Now,click apply, and thats it! Tada!! >>>>
Ahhhh! I feel accomplished here! I have only had my Mepis now for two weeks, and it's great fun! I cant figure out much yet,a bit about the Amarok and where the file tree is and how to use it,but I will learn more. It's like a whole new world that I have to explore,..I just wish people had more patience when they load this into their computer. I did enjoy the ease with which I could maneuver Windows,
but,..with a bit of determination, this is like unfolding a mystery. I love it. This lady can get used to the challenge for sure, and I plan to win. I'm in the same age range as a lot of people who post here,..I'm 52 and have been a Windows prisoner since the first time I touched a computer in 99',so,if I can figure it out,so can everyone else,..if they try.

Hurray for you! I'm discovering lots of things work almost intuitively, when I just try them. For example, did you know you can drag that bar at the bottom (I know, it's not a 'task bar,' but I've temporily forgotten its name in Linux )? I dragged it off to the right side of my screen, just tried it, and it worked. And sometimes I right-click something, and whatever I'm beating my brains out trying to remember how to do will be one of the options that pop up.
Otoh, yesterday afternoon I about went pure-d crazy trying to do something I'd done just the previous day... Using the terminal (Konsole) I typed makedir instead of mkdir. *sigh* I figured out a work-around, and then came across mkdir reading something later, so at least I realized what I did wrong.
I've set up the weather thing a few times now, and as long as I add and close before removing the default one, it works. If I try to add the new location but remove the old one at the same time (leaving only the new one), it doesn't work.
Isn't it great to have these forums? I think I"m up to my 6th reinstall already. Learning just a little more every day.

LOL. There seems to be as many fixes to this problem as there is Mepis users. Wouldn't be surprised to find lefty.crupps ritual dance works as well.
techwatcher,
Next time you find yourself stuck for a command try 'man -k' or 'apropos'.
example:
apropos make
apropos directories
or
apropos make | grep directories
