I'm not sure if these are related, but in case they are I figured I'd post the issues together. This is for Mepis 6.0 on my IBM Thinkpad T21 (PIII, 800 MHz).

1. When starting up, Mepis will often hang right after the initial sequence - just before I get the log in screen. When I force a power off and then try again, it often works. Is this just some kind of issue with Mepis and my hardware? Or is there something I should look for?

2. When shutting down, Mepis will just hang somewhere near the end of the shutdown process. It gets to 70 - 80% of the shutdown sequence and then hangs there. I can hear the fans and hard drive shut down but the screen stays on the shutdown screen. I have to press & hold the power button to shut it off completely.

Does dmesg list have any errors listed? Your logs are always a good place to start.

I'm having the exact same problem with my T21. It always starts up on the second attempt and everything else works perfectly. When closing down it gets as far as 'halt' and everything stops but the display stays illuminated. Did you manage to fix this NickC?
