Have you tried disabling your firewall(s)(guarddog) completely, then apt-get update?

I have been having the same problems.

I have to keep trying a couple of times to get through.

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ sid main non-free contrib
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib

(Not planning on going back to windows though )

just put

4.2.2.1

in bothe primary and secondary DSN . in your stactic seting and use that in sted of automatic seting's
