Scanning problem on Mepis 6.5

I have been setting up Mepis 6.5. Everything seems to work well except scanning.

The first thing I noticed is that GIMP would not start--it stalled trying to load the xsane plugin. I cured that by removing xsane. Later I came back and tried Kooka, which would not start---says it is looking for scanners, and then dies.

I tried removing (with Synaptic) everything relating to scanning, and re-installing. This did not help.

On at least two other distros (same computer and scanner(Epson 3200)), including SUSE 10.2, everything works out of the box.

I have checked a few simple things like permissions and verifying I was in the "scanner" group. Because there are issues with both Xsane and Kooka, my hunch is that there is some file that will not open or is missing.

Any clues?

You helped me with the boot problem I had with Mepis I thought I would try and help but guess what, my Mepis does the same thing. Gimp hangs on the plug in "xscanimage". Will work on and keep an eye on this thread. BTW my scanner is a Microtek but I didn't have it turned on nor did I try and set it up yet.

If I remember correctly, I think I had the same issue on Mepis 6---what version is yours?

Mine is 6.5 so apparantly they haven't repaired it yet. I did a quick Google and I think from what I have read its going to be up to you and me to solve this (and maybe some other helpers from this community).

I just checked my laptop (an old Dell CPX 650) intel with 256 meg that I just installed this same cd and Gimp loads perfect. I haven't tried to hook the scanner to the laptop. The set I'm using that it won't work with is a XP2800 AMD with a km400 mb and 512 cache with 512 meg of mem. This doesn't make sense to me.

I use kooka. It has worked with my Cannon scanner and an HP900 all-in-one.

2 Q's:

Is this 6.5.00 or 6.5.02?

Does 6.0 have the same breakage?

Mine is 6.5.00 and from what I have read on Google it has been a problem for a while. If you'll read my earlier post it seems to be only on certain chip sets.

The version I'm using is 6.5.00. From what I have read this has been a problem for some time on certain chipsets. Thanks fpd, I'll give it a try.

The scanning issue, I saw articles with 6.0, 6.3 beta and 6.5. I did notice that all had Gimp 2.0. I'm going to check later and see if there is a newer version of Gimp that will work if kooka doesn't work.

It looks like I also have 6.5.00. I cannot figure out if an update thru Synaptic will get me to 6.5.02

I have GIMP 2.2.11, but not sure how this is relevant--since Kooka will not work regardless of whether GIMP is running

Just did a system update with synaptic--now kooka works and GIMP works--with both the xsane and xscanimage plugin!!!

Nothing jumped out at me that would have related to the problem--I also cannot tell if this put me at 6.5.02---I am not inclined to worry about it if everything else is working.

Who cares if you're at 6.5.02 as long as the problem is fixed.

BTW, does anyone still running 6.0 have the same problem?

I WILL care---the next time I hear that a problem might be version 6.5.00 vs .02
For the moment I have not a care in the world......
