Root Crashes
Hi all,
Ok, after around 10 seconds of been logged into 'root' on Mepis, my P.C freezes up and i get the error before the freeze :
The application KWin crashed causing the signal 11 (SIGSEGW).
ANy ideas?
Mepis works wonderfully if im logged in as a user.

Aside from the fact that using X as root is discouraged (for exactly this reason), it is possible that your whole PC is not frozen.
What happens if you press Ctrl+Alt+F1? Can you get a console?
Does pressing NumLock or CapsLock cause keyboard lights to change?
If you have another computer, can you still ping the "frozen" machine?

Hi,
The whole P.C locks up and i have to reboot using the reset button. The keyboard freezes up too.
Only thing i did before this started happening was update Mepis with apt-get update.

Again, just a few minutes ago, i logged into root and it was an instant crash.
I was thinking, if i re-install Mepis to my /root partition, how will it react to my settings saved in my /home partiton? or shall i just start from scratch?

Generally speaking, if /home is a separate partition, just make sure the installer DOESN'T format it and you'll be able to use it.

Hi,
I believe i have fixed my crashes when logged in as root.
I reinstalled my Xconfig after booting from the CDLive. Then, after that was done, i logged in a root and it did not crash on me.
The Kwin error i was getting was something to do with the KDE interface.
/applaud self

I'm glad you got it working... seems like a bit of a brute force solution, but I'm glad none the less.
