Has anyone found a way to get the Subject sound system working in Mepis? It's on an old HP Pavillion 8565C.

I think it's why the modem isn't recognized either.

For Riptide stuff, go to the Conextant/Linuxant website. This company make drivers for the Riptide combo cards. I believe the sound drivers are free but the free modem drivers are limited to 14.4kbps. If you want full 56kbps you have to pay like $15 or something like that.

I got these working on my combo card (a really old HP Pavilion 6460) for a 2.4 kernel, but when I upgraded to 2.6, I never could get them to work. I finally just bought an external hardware serial modem for $5 at a local PC shop and all my headaches went away. Still haven't replaced the sound card, but I saw a cheap one on sale for $5 at the same PC shop. But since it's just my fiddling computer, I haven't bothered...
