Report: Laptop Install (HP pavillion)
I just thought I would share some info about my MEPIS install. The version I installed was 3.3.1-1
I have an HP Pavillion ze4315us laptop, and have had a bit of trouble finding a distro that worked on it. So for those of you with an HP Pavillion, you might also have an easy time with MEPIS.
Only one of point of concern though -
During the install, when you get to Display Driver, if you opt to use the ATI drivers instead of the default drivers, you may be forced into a text-only mode. This happened to me, and I could find no way to get X to start up. Maybe this is because I am a Linux newbie, but I couldn't find a way around this problem searching all over the boards.
When I reinstalled and selected default drivers, everything worked properly. I could boot into X, and finish the configuration (set up net connection, email, etc.)
I had tried Mandriva, but it would freeze on shutdown or restart, and there was no fix for it - the only effective fix for those kinds of errors that I found was "choose another distro". So this post is mainly to say that MEPIS will work with this brand of laptop.
If anyone knows a way I can get some more performance in MEPIS out of my ATI Rage Mobility card, I'd much appreciate the tip.
