I have down loaded and unzipped the latest version of fire fox. My question is Is it a wisre idea to remove firefox 1.5.0.4 and set MEPIS to use fire fox 2.0.0.1 as it's default version of firefox.
I have untared the archive to /usr/lib/firefox2 and copied all the pulgins from 1.0.5.0.4 over to the /usr/firefox2/plugins directory from the /usr/lib/firefox/plugins directory.
Is it recommend to do what I want to or should I wait for my MEPIS 6.0-4 release cd to arrive and upgrade the stockinstall.
While Firefox 2 generally works OK, there are some javascript issues. If you are just using it to browse you should be fine. If you are using it for a business application, check the application carefully before making it default. I know that some software, like OpenWebMail no longer works correctly with Firefox 2, because the javascript fails.

macemoneta:
What do you mean by "business application?" Do you mean checking my credit card balance online, my checking account balance online, ordering books online, etc? I know my credit card company, bank, etc, often use java, so could that java issue affect me?
Also, how difficult is it to "untar" something...I've never done it before. Could you tell me how to untar and install the new firefox? Or, could you point me to some reference material that could help?
There are all manner of people that come to this forum. Some use Linux in commercial environments, and have in-house applications that will be accessed via web browser. In that type of environment deployment decisions are made much more cautiously than in a home environment. That's what I was referring to when I said business application.
Some of the web sites you visit may use javascript in the web pages they present to you. On some sites, that software may fail. The only case I'm personally familiar with is web sites that offer web-based email, using the OpenWebMail software. However, you may experience problems with some other sites as well.
To untar a file (similar to unzipping a file), you would use the command:
tar xvf file.tar
If the file ends in ".gz" or ".tgz" use:
tar xvzf file.tgz
If the file ends in ".bz2" use:
tar xvjf file.tar.bz2
For additional information on the tar command issue the command:
