Recovery with the MEPIS CD.
I am currently using my Ubuntu Hedgehog, which I am gonna throw away soon, and move to a system with Debian+Gentoo, booting from the same Vanilla Kernel.
Well, while working with Linux, all of a sudden one of my native Linux DATA Partition gave me an error.
Code:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb2
missing codepage or other error
in some cases useful info is fund in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
Please check that the disk is entered correctly.
Now, suddenly I remembered the I have a MEPIS Cd, which has a Test and Repair Option in it.
I ran the check for Bad Blocks, which did not find anything.
Well, then I checked the Repair File System option, that helped me.
My FS was EXT3.
Thumbs Up for MEPIS.
Just out of curiosity.......
Well, anybody knows how can I fix a bad partition from within a running version of Linux?

I haven't downloaded and used Knoppix yet.
I know that it creates wonders while recovery, but yeah, I am gonna use it soon.
I haven't had enough time to download and use a Copy of Knoppix. (Gonna use it soon.)
Does knoppix provide a lot of options for recovery like I mentioned the "Repair File System" option on the MEPIS cd?
I would like to know.

knoppix
Knoppix is the best cd to keep for repair work as that is what it was originally designed for. I use it to access otherwise inaccessible hds on windoze and linux machines. You can run virus scans, fix all kinds of stuff and save data and files. That was my first distro but after trying several others Mepis just can't be beat for everyday use. Woob

Technically, you can't or at least shouldn't do this: Either the partition won't boot at all or it shouldn't be trusted if it does.
On the other hand, if you want to fix the listed error from within your installed OS, then:[list=1][*]Check out /etc/fstab[*]Run fsck[/list=1]Both have man pages, read as necessary.
Your question about ease of repair in Knoppix is good, I hope someone will answer it here.

The Mepis interface is just that - a GUI for the basic fs tools.
Handy but certianly not indispensible.
I'd be inclined to think Knoppix doesn't offer anything comparable (as a GUI). You need to remount the disk partitions as RW before you can work on them. All the tools are there, but you need to invoke them explicitly.
