Raid 1 in Mepis

I did a forum search but didn't see anything relating to Mepis directly. Also, there is a lot of outdated information on the web so I'm unsure what is relevant or not.

I want to buy a PCI Hardware RAID controller for a RAID 1 array with two large EIDE HDD's and Mepis. 1) I need a recomendation what card to buy 2) is there any additional drivers or software configuration ie MDADMIN that needs to be done and at what point in the install process is that done? Or is hardware RAID set up automatically because of the card?

So hardware RAID drivers are a bit of a pain for Linux. There aren't a whole lot of them with support for Linux and probably even less for Mepis specifically. Highpoint RAID controllers are a good brand that supports Linux, but even they usually only provide binary driver support for the most popular distributions like Fedora, SUSE, Mandriva, etc.

What's the brand and model of your card? If you tell me that, I might be able to help. Just to let you know, a lot of times in Linux you end up having to use software RAID. It's sort of like RAID emulation, meaning that you can't take advantage of the full abilities of the RAID card. But it does give you the same end result, maybe just slightly lower performance. I'll look around to see if there are drivers for your card.

I ended up buying a Sabrent SBT-SDR2 card. This card handles two SATA drives, mine are Western Digital 250 GB. The card is supposed to support Linux according to their web site. ( http://www.sabrent.com/products/index.htm ) When you boot the machine, it will list the drives attached to the card, if you press F4, you can configure the array. Subsequent to that, it will still display that message on boot but you ignore it.

I installed PC-BSD on the machine first, figuring to install Mepis second. PC-BSD saw the array as an array, I forget the drive designation now. A0 I think. Anyway, the bootloader was hosed so I just installed Mepis over it. Mepis sees the array as sda1 and sdb1 although the sdb1 icon is on the desktop, it is at 0 bytes.

The only thing I want to do now is check if they really are mirrored or not by simulating hardware failures.
