Qs on Mepis 7 : No Sound & WinXP Shutdown

Hi all,

I have a couple of questions regarding the newly installed SimplyMepis 7.

The set up is now a dual boot (winxp & mepis) on a standard P4 pc.

1) KMPlayer: No sound on playing video files (mp4, avi). The same with mp3 files with Realplayer. Worked ok with live cd & USB stick.

2) WinXP problem. My sessions with winxp will not shut down since I installed mepis. Note, that I edited the grub boot menu file and I made the winxp the default sys. Is it at all possible that this will mess up the winxp shutdown?

Could you please save me some manual searching? How can I make the ethernet traffic plotter start on boot up?

Thanks,
j

j,

Mepis7 32 or 64-bit version?
Notebook, or are you using wireless on a desktop?

(You indicated you are using a standard P4 pc) I wonder about your ethernet traffic plotter question! Speedygeo uses a Dell notebook, his reply will be better than mine if you are on notebook.

I would post question #1 on Mepislovers. I use the 64-bit version listen to Mp3's all the time... I use Live-radio.net from the Media drop down menu in Konqueror 80% the time I am at work!

I am listening to ICR FM (Ipswich Comunity Radio) near the bottom of page 20 in the UK tonight... Amarok is the player that this website opened... KMPlayer is used by all the Widows Media Player videos I received in e-mail from my on-line friends and a lot of the Internet radio stations I chose...

Dualboot should not effect your XP system, I have always cleaned and defragged my xp system several times, before using the CD install, with grub on the MBR... Never tried editing Grub, as I did not want windows to be default as you have chosen, down arrows always worked for me... You might also post this as a second question on mepislovers (Mepis drop down menu) with your grub info for someone to inspect, I will not have an answer... Also there is great knowledge on this forum, maybe someone will step in with a grub answer if you post your edited version...

Just to make sure, see to it that no sound controls are muted. May be obvious, but just in case! ;-)

Thank you for your replies:

1) Sorry I assumed too much with the P4 shorthand. It is:
P4 = Pentium 4 Prescott = Desktop 32 bit

2) The LAN connection is to the router with a CAT5 cable (though I cannot
see why this should affect the traffic plotter).

3) I have fiddled with the various knobs and options but no sound.

I am bit disappointed with the MEPIS which I liked most till now in that Ubuntu can now read the window partitions and getting ahead in the looks.
