Problem with quotation keystrokes

This might be a dumb question but I have not been able to solve it. Since upgrading to Mepis 6.5 I have had problems with the quotations key, in that I have to press it twice to get ´ or <shift> and two keys strokes to get ¨
ie the single or double quotations marks. I have tried altering the settings in the MEPIS System Assistant under System Administration. I have also tried altering the settings in the Country/Region and Language section. I have also looked in the Input Actions, Keyboard layout and Keyboard actions but nothing seems to work. The fault is everywhere ie in Open Office, Mozilla, as I type this etc etc. It really makes the who0le steup useless as my keyboard won´t (two keystrokes for the ´ in won´t!!) type what I want when I want it. Shame to have to change into Windows just for word processing applications. Can anyone help. I am sure the answer is simple.

While I don't know what region would want or need such a feature, it certainly sounds like the keyboard layout is not right. Please post the keyboard section from /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Can you boot up from a live CD (not Mepis) and verify that the keyboard works normally?

You say "Mepis 6.5", it that the orig. Mepis 6.5, now called Mepis 6.5.00 or Mepis 6.5.02?

This is the relevant section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
Option "XKbOptions" ""
EndSection

I was trying to use the New Zealand inputs but have tried US and have also used the US Intl. Currently it is US.

Yes my keyboard works fine if I boot up on another Live distribution. Have just done this with Ubuntu 7.1 and no problem.

I am pretty sure my version of Mepis 6.5 is the original. I didn´t know there was a 6.5.00 or 6.5.02 and at the login screen it merely says 6.5.

I have upgraded to 6.5.02. With the live CD the quotes worked fine. Now that I have reinstalled the operating system but left my home partition alone the quotes again won´t work properly!!! Must be in the settings somewhere.

More on "quote key not working properly".

Well here I am almost six months later and finally found the solution to my own problem.

I had been experimenting with the latest Mandriva installation and found to my horror that the pesky "quotes problem" had resurfaced.(Quotes key not working properly and having to use it twice to get it to put an apostrophe in anything.) Because the Mandriva installation was on another computer I could compare the settings with my Mepis distibution. The problem was in <Control Centre> <Regional and Accessibility> <Keyboard Layout>. In this screen the 'Active layout' was set to 'US English' and the Keymap' to 'us'. I had inadvertently changed the 'Layout variant" below this to 'intl'. Changing it back to <defaut> solved the problem.

Hope this helps someone, sometime.
