Point and Click Mepis4 - Dual Boot Options - Modem not detected
 

Friends:
I want to continue experimenting with various Linux distros
on hdb, and keep my win98 (which is my printer server)alive
on hda (C:). Is there an easy way to do a dual boot without
GRUB on my Win MBR? I want to install Linux on hdb (D:)
using the whole drive (not a partition). Is it possible to
boot from floppy and do a command line start of Linux?
Could I download a floppy bootable image to use as a starter
for Linux on hdb?


I know I can clear off GRUB with DOS fdisk /mbr, but I would
rather not take the chance of breaking something. They say
to back-up all files before using fdsik /mbr so there must
be some risk. Does this older Mepis 4 use GRUB or LILO? Does
it matter as far as easy removal?


I got a Robin Miller Mepis book and CDs from the library.
I've tried Ubu from a hard drive install and Mepis from a CD
demo. I've found both Ubuntu and Mepis do not detect my
Creative Modem Blaster. I'm looking for an older type serial
external modem in the meantime. Mepis detected my Lexmark
x73 but the test page did not print. Perhaps it might print
if installed on HD.


Does anyone know for certain if Creative Blaster DI5655 (ESS?)
internal modem will work on any distro? Otherwise an external
modem will be a necessity.

BTW Mepis Lovers forums came up FORBIDDEN in my FF2 browser.
Are they down or defunct?

Linux loaders will dual boot fine - if you don't want to write the MBR, just swap the boot order in the BIOS, and install to the MBR on the second drive. Swap as necessary.
Mepis uses grub (at least used to) .
Don't know about the modem - I don't use one.
As for mepislovers, it changed name - try .com rather than .org

Thank You syg00 - good idea.
I'll experiment with BIOS and see if it will work.
