Picture Editor for Mepis 6.0
 

Well G'Day here I am from Mandriva trying Mepis.

First problem -reducing size of pictures for email .
Didn't find a program to do this so I decided to install Xnview which does all the stuff I want .
Came up with dependancy issues which should be there but maybe under another name.

So when picking an RPM file to download for Mepis , what should I be looking for ? RPM's for Mepis seem few and far between and the package manager doesn't seem to list Xnview?

Edit - Moving along a little I see Debian style files are the go . Xnview.com does not give a download with .deb file endings so I brought down a file called XnView-static.i386.rpm and had a look at installing that .

That gave me the following dependencies which are all in the StdC-so-6 package I think but I could not find them in Mepis repositories .Any guidance appreciated.

Firstly, welcome new Mepis user! While I use more than 1 distro, Mepis has really impressed me.

RPM's can be converted to debs using alien and then installed using KPackage.However using apt-get and debs available from the repositories is really the way to go whenever possible.

What features of the software mentioned above do you need? A few alternatives that come to mind:
-digikam (provided by default)
-imagemagick (command line)
-KIM (available by simply right clicking an image)
-gimp (unfortunately no longer part of the default install?)

xnview looks to be a rather old package judging by the fact that the RedHat download is for RedHat 6(?).

Anyway, if you're determined to use it try alien and see what type of errors kpackage throws when trying to install the resulting deb.

edit/ Whoops. Forgot to mention source install is always an option.

Muddywaters had some great suggestions for you; I only have one more to add - ShowFoto. It is similar to the editor Digikam uses. It has a great crop function, red-eye removal, and of course, image-resizing.

I use Mepis 6 and this is a great program. It is already installed, just right click on the file, choose "Open With >".

While I also am used to dealing with rmp based distros for ease of use i found it wasnt hard to install the gimp and resize and adjust contrast to an evening picture of my sons carved pumkin we took last light. i found (here i think) info that says to use synaptics for "packages" (though they are not rmps). being familiar w/photoshop the gimp is powerful and easy enough to figure out for basic image editing (this was really the first time i used it as well, usually use photoshop on windows). i started up synaptics, changed to search mode, search for gimp, right click , select mark for install, then click apply. a few dependencies were fixed and wala. just have to add a menu link later.
