I can't figure out what is wrong. I have latest Pan and several active newsgroups but when I try to subscribe nothing happens. Says No Connection. ... I suspect it might be a port problem with Guarddog but if so I don't know how to fix it. Pls let me know what info I might need to supply to help me solve this problem.

Maybe related...I can't subscribe to any newsgroups with Mozilla News.?? Also my ISP has discontinued Newsgroups, but this shouldn't affect direct connections with Pan should it? I can connect to a newsgroup site like http://freenews.maxbaud.net through Mozilla Browser.

Thanks to help from many people this problem is solved. It was 100% my newbie lack of experience. These newsreaders like Pan and Knode *must* have a log-on to many sites prior to D/L the newsgroups.

There are some sites that don't require a log-on like msnews.microsoft.com [good for testing]. An excellent free site [no log-on] I was told about is :

textnews.news.cambrium.nl [Port 119]
