Only 640x480 res with Nvidia driver

I just recently installed Mepis 11.0.12 but the nvidia driver is only giving a maximum resolution of 640x480. If I delete xorg.conf and restart X I get 1280x720 but thats not using the nvidia driver. Then if I run nvidia-xconfig it goes back to 640x480. My desktop graphics card is a Ndidia Geforce 9800GT.
Cn someone please help me get a decent resolution from the nvidia driver.

Most things are done in xorg.conf.d/ these days. If your xorg.conf is cutting your resolution, something is wrong. No X config is ok - X will usually figure that stuff out - video certainly. You only need config where you're non standard.

roadrash,

Select the correct version of Debian for your Mepis 11.0.12, together with the 9800GT driver:
