Question NVidia Drivers

Right, whatever driver Mepis uses for Graphics as standard needed to be replaced by me for the official NVidia driver, as the standard driver had terrible OpenGL preformance.

Before I continue, I've got Mepis installed on the Hard Drive, not running from Live CD. So, thinking this would be a simple task, I just opened the Mepis OS Centre, clicked "Mouse and Display" and clicked the "Use Official NVidia Driver" option. It went ahead and installed and told me to re-boot. But, no, X would not start when I done this. Not wanting to be detered, I stuck the Live CD in, and put things back the way they were, rebooted, loaded from the Hard dRive, and went into Synaptic, and updated the NVidia Driver (or at least what I thought was the NVidia Driver - I'm a newbie, I'm pretty certain it was though), and tried switching it to the "Official Driver" in OS Centre again. No luck, X wouldnt start again.

So, all I'm asking is can anyone help me? I'm using a 6600GT (AGP) and the OpenGL preformance currently is like that of a GFX card of the early '90's .

Heres the XFree86.0.log file, I was told it might help:

All that above means little or nothing to me. What have I done wrong?

Cheers!

when i had mepis installed i'd get the same exact error. i also have a 6600gt (it's pci-express though), and i was never able to get the drivers working for it in the two months that i had mepis installed. to get x working go to your xf86config-4 file and change nvidia back to vesa.

your problem

i have a nvidia card, and have great open gl preformance, as im a hard core gamer, note you have an older version of mepis, cause i see your using the older kernel, there is a newer release of mepis and i think you may have the wrong driver loaded up, regardless you can go to nvidia.com and dl the new drivers... This problem is not common, if you wanna talk you can get me on yahoo at insane_mepis_freak

I know how you feel.

Im running a 6800Gt and it works.

heres what i did.

Boot MEPIS. Then mount the cd, somewhere (cant remember the path) is a nvidia glx.dev package (install it).
Then open MEPIS_OScontrol and select official nvidia drivers.

Once installed you need to edit the XFree86 Config File..
///
You must edit XF86Config and set the following:
Delete 'Load Dri' <-- iirc... ill double check my config file when i get home.
add Load "glx"
Replace 'driver "nv"' with 'driver "nvidia"' <--The install should have renamed the driver module.

Nah, here's a way better way to do it.

First of all get kernel sources installed, Mepis 3.3/3.3.1 has a nice little guide located in /usr/src, called KERNEL_README
and that expains how to get the kernel installed and running. and reboot after kernel is done.

Then go to, nvidia.com, and go to download drivers, and download the appropriate linux ia32 .run file

then go into the terminal type, killall kdm
then login as root, and type your password.

then cd to where nvidia installer saved.

then do, "sh NVIDIA-...........(whatever its called.)"

then it will go through a nice installation.

then type in, xfree86config, and select all the right options <corresponding to your system>

then if it's not already installed, apt-get install nano, or other editor.

then do, cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

then nano /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, and find the video card driver, it should say "nv" and change it to "nvidia"

also find the "modules" section, and add this.
Load "glx"

-----

I had troubles with the original xf86config, so I generated a new one, and I got nvidia installed to play games.

This is not really hard, just longer and a better process of doing it.
Definitely do the kernel, you need sources for a lot of packages.

idk there may be easier ways, but this just works and gets the job done. Right.
