NTFS partitions not showing up in Mepis anymore

Well I went into synaptic last night, and ran the "Smart Updates" I BELIEVE it was called, I may be off a bit so please excuse me if I am. But anyway after downloading over 300 files and running all of the updates my Mepis no longer sees my NTFS partitions, I only have 1 Linux ext2 partition the rest are NTFS because I use Windows for the most part. Anyway is this fixable or do I have to reinstall Mepis just to see my NTFS drives again.

I just discovered my Mozilla Firefox is not working right either, it just closes out. Konqueror gives me this error when I try and go into devices which is where I normally went to access my NTFS drives:
Protocol not supported

devices

^That is pretty much what I get, I guess this is what I get for installing everything instead of being choosier

Also now I tried opening KPackage and it closes out by itself...
Is the improved performance from my PC worth all of this?

There's a setting in the Control Panel to make visible on your desktop unmounted and mounted NTFS partitions. When you did the upgrade, it may have overwritten your preferences for that. Poke around... it may be in taskbar or panel preferences... something about device icons? I'm using Gnome now, so I can't be more specific. Otherwise, you can always manually mount the partitions.

Wow. It sounds as if your installation got hosed. I never had the smart upgrade do that before. If worse comes to worse, I'd back up your files, back up your bookmarks and emails and do a clean reinstall...

I tried installing a fresh Mepis and upgrading hardly anything, here is what I installed:
libdvdcss
dvdrip
dvd+rw tools
irmp3
and updated libircclient0

Now I don't think any of the above should cause me to have the same problem, none of those programs seem like something that could wreck the OS like this.

Edit: I also upgraded Firefox

I'm making some progress I have the NTFS partitions working when I place a shortcut on my desktop and the mount it. But when I click home and devices I get that Protocol not supported
devices error message. I'm almost there I think....
