ok, my problem is that the sound card is not detected..."/dev/dsp does not exist"....how do i remedy this? i looked at the support page on the mepis comminity, and it tells me to update "meauto" and "meauto-data".... how do i do this?? please bear in mind that i am a total newcomer to linux. your help is appreciated.
okay... figured how to do the update but.... when i did, the messages keep saying "could not resolve 2004.mepis.org" and "unable to fetch file... server said 'could not open file'"... WTF??? please explain this to me.
"KDE VERSION: 3.2.3" indicates something even older than my 3.3.2 box, so yes, "these problems with KPackage (are) due to the outdated version of mepis".
It's a long story as to why, but you probably need to use 1 of the new *buntu repository versions: 6.0 & 6.5.02.
I upgraded to MEPIS 6.5 RC2/32, and the sound card problem still persists.
The sound card in question is an ISA Creative SB AWE64, model no. CT4500.
I ran alsaconf, and the card IS detected.
running dmesg, the card IS detected.
A little red X is on the Kmix icon in the kicker.
I have an inkling that it may be an IRQ issue, but as my machine is a Compaq Pentium 2, accessing the full BIOS is a bit of a royal pain in the @$$.
Since the card IS detected, however, I am a bit cynical that it is IRQ related.
The Mepis wiki page on sound at mepis.org has been utterly useless to me.
This card is absolutely ancient. ISA sound cards are extinct, as far as I know. But, I would rather get it working than buy a new card, as I am a stingy scotsman, lol.
You could also type hwinfo into konsole. Then scroll through the output till you find your sound card. The driver for the soundcard may be listed in the hwinfo output. If it is listed then all you do is add the driver name to your etc/modules folder as root and re-boot.
