new user issues
I'm a Linux newbie. I tried Fedora and it didn't work very well. I tried Linspire and it had great presentation but did some very non-Linux things like "My Documents" and using the root account by default, and it's not free. I'm now trying MEPIS and I like it, but am having a few issues with it.
I'm glad it automounts CDs, but it doesn't quite have it right. When I put an AudioCD in and click "CD-ROM" from the desktop or Konquerer, I get: "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom". But in Konquerer, a location named "Audio CD Browser" outside the "Devices" tier on the left panel shows up with the audio tracks. Also, KsCD automatically loads the correct mounted drive (it shows the proper # of tracks and track times) when the CD is in.
The second problem is that error messages play through the speakers, but no music. I checked KMix and everything is turned on, but neither KsCD or XMMS will put audio through the speakers when they are playing the audio CD. I've checked volumes everywhere I know to check. Somehow, xine plays the music just fine.
How do I network MEPIS with WinXP? I've put them both on the same workgroup and physical connections are working, but WinXP doesn't recognize the MEPIS computer, and Smb4K doesn't see anything on the network.

Mounting audio CD's doesn't work the same way a data CD does, which is why the system reports back with an error when you try it. You simply load your media player and they are displayed, as you have found with KSCD.
With regards to listening to audio CD's, can you play any audio at all, such as sound files on your computer? There are a ton of mixer settings and applications such as KSCD and xmms also have their own volume controls which might be causing a problem. If you have KDE installed, with the KDE Control Center, you can test your sound system and adjust system volumes. Otherwise, are you sure the sound card is correctly configured?

Interesting. Hopefully I'll come across an article or book chapter on the difference between data and audio CD mounting in Linux, so I'll know how that works.
Sounds works everywhere except when trying to play an audio CD with KsCD. I can even play the same audio CD in xine just fine.
