glxgears-what does it say in the terminal(FPS)?

try installing amarok, ill bet you will like it MUCH more than xmms.

smb4k is a windows network browser thingy. open synaptic and do a search for ftp to find some ftp apps.

firefox is already installed in mepis, just launch it from the kmenu.

the most important thing for you to do right now is to figure out how to use synaptic. go to kmenu-system-synaptic. from there, you can download and in stall new programs and upgrade all your current apps. just hit reload, then mark all upgrades then apply. that will update your entire mepis install. and it will upgrade to firefox 1.0.4 for you too.

I don't see a terminal..?
I will take a look at Amarok..

I knew that firefox was already installed, obviously.. Since I was using it.. It's just that this is version 1.0.3 and I like all my stuff updated..

I will take a look at synaptics thingy and respond later when/if I learn how to use it.. Thanks for the reply nuka_t.. Peace

~!~EDIT~!~
I tried out Synaptics and have no idea what to do.. I found firefox and clicked on the box and it wouldn't let me do anything.. All the options except for the last two (Dealing with removal) were grayed out.. I clicked on refresh and then upgrade and then Smart Upgrade and it still didn't do anything.. Unless it did?

This is getting a bit confusing but I am up for the challenge.. Otherwise I wouldn't have deleted my Windows partition last night! Woot!

~!~By The Way~!~
I got this when entering Synaptics for the first time..

W: Couldn't stat source package list http://apt.mepis.org unstable/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/apt.mepis.org_3.3_dists_unstable_main_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)

To be able to install programs from Debian repositories:
start Synaptic.
go to Setting -> Repositories.
enable the "deb" type of repositories for Sarge. (don't enable the "non-us" ones, they are obsolete)
enable Sid sources too if you want to get bleeding edge packages (you still have to enable Sarge sources since not all packages are available in Sid)
click OK.

And the you'll have to do a "refresh"
And then if you want to install a package, click on it, select of installation and then press "apply".

Thanks guys.. But I think I am gonna wipe all my partitions and start over.. Don't ask, just yea.. I like everything neat and clean.. And when I wiped windows partition it gave me some other weird, completely empty partition under the devices..

Also, I can't seem to modify my Linux partition to increase the space.. *Doing this under QTparted mind you..*

I will post back once I have everything installed again..

Another Distro?

Can anybody recommend another distro for me to use? I re-installed and am still having trouble with TuxRacer stalling and the OpenGL screen savers lagging.. It has frozen once when going into my root folder..

Anything else that is nice and user friendly and has a very good GUI.. I love MEPIS and it rocks for my first Linux install but seems to not like my hardware or something.. I guess I want to go with the KDE versus Gnome.. I liked how MEPIS came with AIM program and Firefox and everything else.. Suggestions are welcomed, thanks for being here guys! Peace..

Don't think you can go wrong with either PCLinuxOS or Kanotix. Give 'em a shot!

eVGA GeForce 6800GT? Would that require a Nvidia driver? Did you try to install it? It's pretty simple from Mepis OS Center, maybe it's worth a try before you go through the pain of installing other distro that may or may not solve the problem.

Ughghghg..

I am now booting from the disc, now let me tell you why..

I installed the nvidia driver from the Mepis OS Center and rebooted like it suggested.. When rebooting I got errors such as..

Stealth (Computer Name) login:
Mepis install/unstable

kde:
Mepis install/unstable

Those wern't the errors word for word but something along those lines..

It froze at the last error and never entered the GUI..

So, Should I try another distro? I am really hoping that the other distros are just as great as Mepis.. Isn't it based off of Debian? Guessing I should steer clear of that also?

Well I don't know anything about your video card... try other distros and see how it works (some cards don't have 3D acceleration in Linux). Maybe you just need a different driver version... but I don't know.

Try any distro from top 20 at www.distrowatch.com (most of them are good). I like though Debian based distros (but I'm biased).

stick with mepis. like i said on the previous page, dont be suprised if the os center nvidia installer didnt work. it didnt work for me either. but i did it myself and my 6600gt works great right now.

use the livecd from mepis and open the os control center. find the option to repair your xf86config file in there and once you have done that, it should start working again. make a thread here and well try to help you set up your card. you have to install drivers manually in most distros anyway, it was worth giving the automatic config tool in mepis a shot.

unless you want a really noob distro linke lindows, mepis is the way to go. ive heard good things about pc linux os though, if mepis doesnt pan out.

Wine on Mepis

Sure you can. Since MEPIS is Debian based, just download the Debian package. You can install it with from Konqueror(right-click->Manage Package->Install). You can use all Debian packages on MEPIS. By the way, to play Windows games under Linux, i recommend you to look into Cedega . You have to pay for it though Best of luck!

EDITamn, sucks when I miss the second page. This was supposed to answer the question about Wine in the end of the first page.
