my desktop doesn't display drives

My MEPIS installation isn't displaying icons for the CD drives on the desktop, and I want it to. (I don't need the hard drives and partitions there, because Kwikdisk can access them.) I think something went wrong, because I'm sure I remember CDs being displayed until recently. I thought I could just select New-->Link to Device, but that doesn't work because it says my CD drives don't have /dev entries. Also, whenever I'm selecting a location and try to go through "Storage Media," the CD drives and floppy drive are never listed, only the HD partitions. I can't be sure about my DVD-ROM drive, but MEPIS obviously knows my CD-RW drive is presemt, because I just burned something to it with K3b.

Thank you, Ace. But there's something else wrong, because that only caused my hard drives and partitions to appear. The CD drives and floppy drive still won't, and as I say, at least one CD drive is obviously recognized.

maybe you could try creating a file called cdrom.desktop in that file put the information:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Icon=system
Type=Link
URL=media:/cdrom

Im just taking a guess - at work on XP laptop

--cAm
