music not working!

hi all, ive just moved over to mepis 3.3 from windows and am having a few problems.

when i log on i can hear the start up music (no matter which user i log on with) if im using root i can play my mp3's and listen to cd's no problem, but if i log on as any other user i get a box come up saying i dont have the right permissions! is there an easy way to set up permissions?

cheers, rod...

is this a clean new install? makes troubleshooting easier if it is.

try this. go to a terminal (in the kmenu -> system or ->utilities, not sure where) and a terminal window will open. looks like a DOS screen. Type "su" [enter key]. this gets you into the root user mode. give it the root password [enter].

now type "alsaconf" [enter] and answer the questions. after its done you'll be back at the terminal promt. type "exit" [enter] and again "exit" [enter] to close the window.

now try it. any luck?

yeah m8 it is a clean install, windows is gone for good (i hope )

i tried what u suggested and it all went through ok, it done just as u said it would.

i still get the same problem when trying to play mp3's
You do not have enough permissions to read file:/home/steph/Music/The Zutons/Who Killed...... The Zutons/02 Pressure Point.mp3

i do hear the sound of glass breakin every time i try tho, so i doubt it would be a driver or hardware problem (well i guess anyway)

i also just noticed that it does the same when im trying to open pic's or vid's

would it have somthing to do with the way i setup the account?
i left it all as default when i made it.

cheers for the help

as root do the following command:
chown -R steph:users /home/steph/Music; chmod -R +rw /home/steph/Music
