Mepis6 - any details on XGL integration?
Does anyone know if Mepis6 is due to have auto-setup of sorts to use the XGL/Compiz technology? I've recently installed SuSE and Kubuntu because I've heard that they were easy, but I was too lazy to follow through with the "easy setup"...
Mepis has been very good in the past with its tech setup, especially the NVidia and ATI driver installations. Will the new version go the next step?

Well the few days ago released new Kubuntu 6.06 "installer" is actually a LiveCD you can boot by placing the CD in drive while starting the machine; when it's up, just open the "Install" icon on the desktop, click through 6 small easy screens (perhaps with the default settings), wait a moment and you're done - about 15-25 mins of time was taken depending on your machine. I couldn't think of an easier setup....it's much much much more easier than the earlier version..also if you need to get more control over the setup, simply get one of the "special" installation discs from their website. You should be fine.
I'm not sure if any distro has an "auto setup" for XGL/Compiz, as it's still just a development version, isn't it? At least was some time ago..anyway, with Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu installing it is a charm, I googled and found a web page from Ubuntu's server where there were a couple of simple commands to get the correct apps, how to edit xorg.conf (very very easy & quick) and how to start/stop XGL/Compiz. It took about few minutes for me, and it was the first time I was in touch with XGL, so it's not difficult at all. I don't know how Mepis does it, but I'm pretty sure the Ubuntu's "step-by-step instructions" are the easiest you can get at the moment..

Is this the page to which you refer?

I have Kubuntu installed right now and it seems pretty nice, but I have a few things to change of course. I have been somewhat against the Ubuntu philosophy but now I think i get it... especially after a few months of broken Debian updates.
I have the NVidia driver installed but I've not tried anything with XGL yet. My first order of business is getting my NVidia GeForce 5200 TV out to work; under Mepis the tele would clone automatically after installing the NVidia driver, but no such love from Kubuntu. Can I use an older x configuration file to add sections into my current xorg.conf? or should i wait and try Mepis to see if it works the same as before, and then start using that 7.0 conf file as my starting point?
