Mepis playing DVDs

I'm about to buy a DVD player for my Mepis computer and need to know how to get it working to play DVDs.
I've got a dual boot with Ubuntu and XP and have it working with Kubuntu via a script at the Ubuntu forums but it's choppy as hades...and unwatchable really.
What do I need to DL for Mepis and where do I get it?
This is going to determine wheather I scrap Ubuntu for good because if it works correctly in Mepis Ubuntu is history.

you don't need anything inparticular, just yourt dvd player of choice, mplayer, xine, totem, ogle etc... (and any dependencies they require)

Actually that's what I'm asking I guess.
Does anyone know what dependency packages I need and where to get them?
I believe I need somekind of 'DECSS' package but what's it called?
Is it in the repositories or do I need to search the internet?

you'll probably need libdvdplay, libdvdnav and libdvdcss. go with mplayer it plays anything. make sure your dma is on for the dvd-rom.

This is probably what I'm looking for - I've got the DMA thing down.
Are these in the repositories? Or can I apt-get them?
Do you guys actually have you DVD players up and running?
Any problems, like being choppy, or freezing?

To play DVDs in Mepis, aside from the obvious player, you'll need the file named libdvdcss2. You can apt-get it.

I would really doubt the choppiness of playback has anything to do with which distro you're using. That would have more to do with memory, caching, DMA, and video settings than anything.

Hey Masonm,
I've checked the DMA (hdparm -d1 /dev/cdrom,cdrom1) on both drives and it says that it's ON.
I've fixed this on my SuSE computer and it was the DMA set to off, and this one exhibits the exact same choppy thing - so I'm at a loss.
As far as I can tell the settings on the player are the same.
Anyone got anymore suggestions??

To all who took the time to answer my post - THANKS!
I've solved my Ubuntu DVD problem and I am confident that when I get my new DVD drive for Mepis I can get it up and running easily.
I case anyone is wondering about Ubuntu it was a simple matter of becoming "Master of the Known Universe" in xine.

You really only need two .debs - libdvdcss2 and w32codecs. Just 'apt-get install' the required packages and that should sort it out for you. If you are running MEPIS with the 2.6 kernel, then the DMA should be enabled by default and playback should work without any issues. I have no issues with my system at home running MEPIS (v3.3.1). You may want to get the libdvdplay, libdvdnav, and libdvdread files as well. But to my knowledge the latest Xine should have the nav portion built-in.

Firstly make sure you have the nerim repos enabled.(just remove the #)
You can find it in /etc/apt/sources.list

Then in a konsole as root user,

apt-get update
apt-get install libdvdcss2 w32codecs
