Mepis 8 beta RC 2, slow?

I really like this version of Mepis, it Rocks! The only issue I am experiencing is a slow to load Desktop. After I log in, the
Panel Taskbar Icons appear about 45 seconds later; then,
I can actually use them about 30 seconds after they appear.
I am using Mepis on my spare PC, 512 MB RAM, P4 - 1700 MHz,
80 + gigs of free space. Could RAM be the issue?

Thanks,

-s

Smile

Recommended Mepis 8 requirements are:

* Intel Pentium 4, AMD Athlon XP, (or 64 bit processor for MEPIS Linux-64)
* 512 MB RAM
* 20 GB free hard drive space

You seem to be ok on the RAM front.

I assume that you are referring to the latest Mepis 8 RC1? Or do you mean one of the earlier Beta (1 to 6)versions?

There may be a M8 RC2 released shortly. Alternatively, M8 final may be the next release.

Mepis 8 final-coming to a mirror site near you SOON!

Betas...

I downloaded RC 2 on October 20, 2008. I may end up waiting for the
full Release of Mepis 8. What I'm seeing in this beta release is
many improvements over my first crack at Mepis, v3. I used Mepis 6
for a bit, but was unimpressed. With this release, It appears
the Mepis grew up.

Update

After removing WinBlows from the other partition, MEPIS
loads a lot faster; strange, but I won't complain.

Just upgrade what you have and it ought to look really good!

That had to be SimplyMEPIS 8.0 Beta 2, not RC 2. RC stands for Release Candidate. I have not seen any announcement for RC 2, and if, by chance there is one, it is coming out this week or soon, not way back in October.

I recommend doing one of two things: either run the upgrade tool - when you see the letter in the icon tray with a non zero number next to it, click the icon, provide the root password, then press Reload in the package manager (synaptic) application, then select update, then apply to get your system up to the latest software.

SimplyMEPIS 8.0, in Release Candidate 1 form, is VERY impressive indeed. The Beta 2 release was extremely impressive, considering its early Beta test status, but MUCH has been improved since then, and an update and upgrade are appropriate, if you have not already done so.

Note that you do not need to download and install RC 1 unless you want to have a fresh CD nearby. Updating over the network and then upgrading the software with any available changes will bring you right up to date. I think you will be pleased with the results.
