Mepis 7.0 release 32 iso Woes
Hi All,
I am not sure where to start..During the install if I plug in my EdimaxUSB EW-7318USG wireless card it will not even install the live OS..It stops at networking
with a splashy error(signal 6 whatever that is)..
Thus I tried to install without the wireless adapter plugged in and it does install the live system but there is no desktop icons..(error failed klauncher)..You have to log out then back in again to get the desktop icons such as the trash can and the install icon and others..
OK,so since I have everything except the wifi and it seems to work,I decide to install it on my hard drive which seems to go without a hitch..It then appears to find all my hardware..Then I tried to re-boot with the USB wifi adapter inserted..It does boot and then I log in to my desktop but with out any panel icons(clock etc do not show)..I log out and in several times and the system is very very slow logging but never does show the panel icons when the desktop is present..I have tried two downloads and two different cd's but both act alike so I know it is not bad media..If I remove the USB adapter it will boot OK with all desktop icons and panel icons..I do not have any of these issues with kubuntu, mandriva, suse or fedora with the same USB adapter it seems unique with Mepis..
My system is a mostly intel chipsets(865MB)(P4 3.0ghz) Nvidia FX5600 video card and 2 megs ddr2 ram..Nothing fancy..
I wonder if anyone else had these or similar issues with wifi USB adapters?(Mine uses the rt73 drivers which work in kubuntu and other distros..I feel this is specific to my system
but I have never seen a USB adapter card cripple a system like this B4..
BTW when I had the system working with the wired internet eth0 card I let it do all the updates
so I know that its not a upgrade problem..
I hope someone can shed some light here..
Thank you
jolphil

I'm using two different Ralink usb cards with Mepis 7 and do not have this problem. Only thing I can think off hand is to check bios settings. Try disabling or enabling legacy usb support. Make sure machine is not set to boot from usb devices.

I sometimes have trouble with dhcp for dns. This can stall the booting process. Assigning a static ip is one remedy if your ip rarely changes.

Fair_is_Fair: I have tried both static and dhcp
and both react the same..It will kill the panel icons after I log in..No way in the GUI to do anything at that point..
Handy Dan: I went to the link you sent and it seems very much like my problem..I did the suggested "FIX" by adding a ampersand...Sadly it made no difference..It is starting to look like this version at least will not work for me..Unless something dramatic happens it's back to kubuntu..
Thanks all for your help,
jolphil

Something went wrong in Mepis 7.0's drivers. It connects to a network (a router, at least), but something is slowing data transfer outside the internal network to "Bytes" rather than "kB".
LiveCD 7.0 and installed 7.0 do the same bad stuff.
LiveCD 6.5 works perfectly... and I will soon be installing 6.5 over 7.0
Could the drivers in 7.0 have mistaken one NIC for another? Something changed from 6.5 to 7.0. I'm sad that my one voice won't be heard, and the issue will not be addressed, as most people are having no issues.

OT comment on profile
jolphil,
Check out what your profile does to the display of your posts in Konqueror (very narrow).
I believe that is happening because there are no spaces in your "Distribution: " list:
Code:
Distribution: Kubuntu,Fedora,Mandriva,Suse,puppy-Linux
If you would make it look like this:
Code:
Distribution: Kubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, Suse, puppy-Linux
, I believe it would solve this problem.
The benefit to you is that your posts will be easier to read & you are therefore likely to get more & better help.

HI Archtoad6
I am sorry,I did not realize there was a problem with my posts..I made the changes you suggested with my profile and then checked it in konqueror..It looked ok..
FWIW: I use mozilla Firefox and rarely use konqueror online..Firefox displayed it OK..
If there is still some prob. please let me know..
Thanks,
jolphil

Just had to notice which line was long, then notice that it had no spaces, remember that text formatting folding rules can be weird.
And, I think I have seen this before at LQ.

fpd,
It would be better to start a new thread, and provide information about your system so someone might assist you with your Lan Card, or bad installation...

fpd,
Interesting you are sadly disappointed, I find that mepis7 is a good KDE Linux Distro and stable as a rock...
It runs on both old and amost cutting edge hardware...
Mepis7, runs well on my Compaq Armada1500c notebook. Wired or wireless as a great coffee cruiser with only 160 MB of memory... The Armada is a Little heavy to cart around, but works well with free public WiFi...
It also runs quite stable on the February assembled AMD Quad system... I disabled the on-board sound in the Bios, and installed a E-cycled SoundBlaster as a 2 minute fix, rather than toy about addressing the newer on-board sound that was not recognized out of the box...
My greatest disappointment about Linux is Adobe's failure to release a 64-bit flash, and there is no 64-bit Java to make the Konqueror web-browser the bell of the ball (where is the Icedtea development)...
I also would like several better Graphic instructional books, I liked the Adobe classroom in a book series, and I have not seen a similar offering for several Linux graphic programs: Gimp, Inkscape and Xara Xtreem...
Also missing is a Program for stationary, greeting cards and posters: Broaderbund' released "The Print Shop" for the Commodore 64 a long time ago, and has continued to release newer version of this program almost every year. I find it remarkable there is no equivalent greeting card software for the Linux operating system.
The other oddity: Lack of Usenet posting software. I have found "newspost" but amazed there is not a selection of Usenet posting programs with a polished graphical user interfaces, similar to what the "Pan newsreader" provides for the Usenet reader... I am surprised that the polished "Pan newsreader" is still incomplete; not able to post attachments, nor able to display gif or bmp file types that are commonly posted to binary newsgroups...
Yes, I find software missing in the Linux arena, but I have not found the Linux operating system mepis7 lacking... It may not run the latest version of every Linux software package, but the stability is truly golden. Mepis7 also again has the entire Debian library to for users experimentation with until reaching the point of tossing Warren Woodford's proven Linux stability out the window...
My 2 cents...

7.0 Updated
There is now a community generated remaster of 7.0 that includes the Xorg 7.3 server. It solved my problems w/ 7. It's called MEPIS 7.073uce ( Unofficial Community Edition). It's discussed here & links to its torrents are in NoobJason's sig. block. I seed both the 32- & 64- bit .iso's.
