MEPIS 6.01 read/write permissions problem
I installed Mepis 6.0 off of DVD on a machine that I sold. As part of the OS install, I added lines to the hosts file from MVPS and modified the resolv.conf file. I made them both read only. I went back to the resolv.conf as root and made one more change. I didn't think at the time but the file was read only. I double checked and it is definitely read only from the root account too, yet I was able to write to the files. Is there a way to fix this? I see this as a defect, but it might be normal for *Ubuntu based distros, or Linux in general for all I know. (I checked in Xubuntu and I can do the same thing)

My resolve.conf is owned by root ,group is tty , -rw-r--r--
Is yours the same except -r--r--r-- ? Or have you changed the group
Anyway I confirm that it is so with my machine too.
I changed permissions to read only and as root was still able to write to the file and save the changes

Yup, mine are all read only. The group is root on the Xubuntu box and on the Mepis box, not TTY. I only changed the permissions to make them read only for everyone. For kicks, I think I'll install OpenSUSE 10.2 and try see what is on it.
