Question MEPIS 6.0.1 - Live DVD: Trouble starting, mounting, etc

Hello all,

To give some background, here is my set-up:

1) Windows XP Pro on master hdd in NTFS. FAT32 partion on same master hdd for data storage.
2) MEPIS 3.43 on slave hdd in ext3. Swap about 2 gigs. Ext3 partion on same slave hdd for data storage.
3) Grub is my dual boot method
4) 2.4 ghz pentium, 1 gig ram, 1 DVD (single layer) burner, 1 DVD reader
5) Dell 1907 FP LCD monitor
6) Nvida GeForce card, 128 mb

Today I decided to take the MEPIS 6.0.1 Live DVD for a spin. I did not install it. I simply used it as a Live DVD to test its basic features and layout.

First Issue:

The 1st time I booted from the disc, I got to a black screen with a message stating something about configuration (I assume for my screen). Unfortunately, it locked, so I manually restarted the PC. The 2nd time I booted from the disc, I got the same black screen and the same message, but MEPIS proceeded to load the login screen as it was supposed to do.

Does anyone know what could have caused the "goof" during the 1st attempt?

Second Issue:

When I login as "root" and want to mount any of my hdd partitions, the only way I can do it is via the little "KwikDisk" icon in the lower right screen. However, if I go into the actual "mnt" directory (1st -- click home icon in lower left, 2nd -- click "up" arrow to go up a directory level to arrive at / and then 3rd -- click on mnt) I see my folders for my various partions. However, they are empty when I open them.

Does anyone know what could explain this? Why can I mount them and see them with the KwikDisk method but not with the other method? Is that normal or is that a sign of a problem?

Third Issue:

Does anyone know what happened to those eight [8] little icons that used to be in the lower left screen (at least on MEPIS 3.43 that is where they were located)? There were icons for things like MEPIS OS center, System Guard, Kinfo, System Config, Console, Superuser file manager mode, etc. I looked around in the "K" menu and found most of those icons except for the MEPIS OS center.

Does anyone know where the MEPIS OS center went? Maybe I simply missed it while looking in the various menus. Regardless, I liked having it as an icon (along with the seven (7) other icons) in the lower left screen.

I welcome all thoughts, suggestions, etc.

Thanks!

The MEPIS OS Center and all the other "little Icons" are in the System (two gears) menu. System / Settings / System Administration / MEPIS Utilities. MEPIS 6.0 is the way to go. Install it and give it a "road test". KwikDisk is the way to go for mounting. As to question #1 I don't have a clue.

Mepis will not automatically read your nvidia card. There should be a "vesa" option on the boot up menu. Some distros do this automatically when they find a nvidia card, but mepis does not. All Distros As far as i know, will require you to set up the nvidia card after a hard install, and in the meanwhile use vesa, which works just fine for everything but games . . .er . .most of the time.

Yes...there were several boot options. The 1st option (which I always pick, regardless of which MEPIS version I use) is "normal." Right after that there is a "vesa" option. I will use the "vesa" option next time to see what happens.

So, what exactly is the difference between "normal" and "vesa?"
