Max Resolution at 800x600 in SimplyMepis 2004
Hi,
I installed SimplyMEPIS 2004 from live-CD. To the point this far it works well, but there is a problem concerning the display. When I run the live CD, my monitor will be just black if I choose the resolution "1024x768" (but it works well with "800x600"). I don't think if my monitor or graphic card doesn't support the resolution, since it can show the display at 1024x768 @ 60 Hz in Mandrake 10.0, and Mandriva LE 2005. With this condition I installed the MEPIS to my HDD; as I checked the display configuration in the newly-installed linux, I can't find higher resolution than 800x600 in the drop-down menu.
As an information, my graphic card is nVidia GeForce 4 MX 440 64 MB, and my monitor is GTC 15" which (according to windows xp) has capability of showing 1024x768 @ 60 Hz. Is the monitor driver isn't supported? It's not a big nuisance, though, but it is bugging me when there is a configuration menu that extended downward beyond 600 pixels.
Can anyone help?

no you dont need a newer version but be advised that version is about 2 years outdated and you need to correct the repos first then you need to install oscenter, upgrade meauto, and then use the oscenter to enable nvidia.

Thanks for the replies. I have installed Mepis 3.3.1 now, but the problem still occurs. It is exactly like what happens with SimplyMepis 2004:
When I booted with the liveCD (at resolution 1024x768), the OS can boot, but at the point where the KDM should start, the screen will be blacked out (but the OS runs!). I prove it by typing "demo", [Tab] , "demo" , [Enter] and the starting jingle was played from my speaker. The nVidia driver has been detected, though.
There was no problem with 800x600, so I installed it at 800x600 just like before, and tried to tweak the setting at the OS center (Display >> Monitor) and change my monitor specification (from "unknown" to "Generic CRT", resolution set to "1024x768" without changing the vertical & horizontal sync). It resulted the Mepis closed the black-screen where the KDM should start and delivered message "mepis...(i forget what)... unstable".
Then the system asked me to login with command-line interface. I don't know exactly what happened, but I suspect that my monitor driver isn't supported by Mepis.
I already love Mepis' KDE display and tools; that's too bad if I should log in not in at least 1024x768.

You might try manually changing the config file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
Look for the Section "Monitor" section of this file, and paste the HorizSync, VertRefresh, and Modeline values from the same XF86Config-4 file in your Mandrake partition. Likewise, in the Section "Device" section, paste values from your Mandrake-generated XF86Config-4 file. Then recycle XWindows, and see if that helps.
Naturally, you'll want to save the original XF86Config-4 file before you start, as a fallback copy.
