KDE 3.5 upgrade kills cd/floppy detection

I am running Mepis 3.4-3 Final. I had no problems. I upgraded to KDE 3.5, exactly the same way I did in 3.4-3 rc2. With that version the cd auto detect worked after the upgrade. I choose N when asked to switch files, you know all the default answers.

In 3.4-3 rc3 I did the same thing, & it removed the floppy desktop icon as well as killed the cd auto detect. I tried it again with 3.4-3 final just to see if this was fixed, it is not.

Does anyone know how I can fix this or if it can be fixed? I love KDE 3.51, I would hate to have to re-install & go back to KDE 3.4, but it is no good this way without use of my dvd reader & cd burner.

btw. K3b burner program does pick up my cd burner & dvd reader, they are there.

upgrade "hal" to 0.5.5.1-5 [unstable/sid]
You need to have at least "udev" 0.081-1 [testing/etch as well]

cd/floppy

There is something in the wiki at the mepis users group about adding HAL to the group disk (Kuser)after a kde upgrade to 3.5.-worked for me!

thanks to Satinet here for the answer......

i believe the code was:

after opening in terminal: type, "apt-get hal"

run in "root" and that should get your cd/dvd spinning--of course after a reboot. (i don't care what they say bout Linux---reboot)
