Many media types require the w32codecs package to be installed before they will play, but w32codecs cannot be included by default in a U.S. based distribution. It's easy to install in any case.
In Synaptic, go to settings -> repositories and enable the medibuntu repository. Reload and then you will be able to install w32codecs.

It's w32codecs not win32codecs. It was win32codecs in the debian repos but Mepis 6.x uses the Ubuntu repos where it's w32codecs.
Just click somewhere on the list of programs and type w32 and it should scroll right to it. I've got Synaptic open right now & it's there.

Have you tried Synaptic to find the Mepis mplayer (search: mplayer)?
