Mepis is built on debian so apt/synaptic/dpkg/kpackage come to mind. Synaptic will probably feel most comfortable. The Gimp is sorely missed from the default install by many users.

Scroll down this forum a little to the post about the new mepis guide. The three links listed there should answer the basics.

You can also compile software from scratch which i recommend for fixing the poorly maintainedubuntu version of the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS).

So no graphics, just a text login prompt?

Did you install the driver like this?
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.p..._nvidia_driver

At the time of my install the nvidia-new driver was broken and I was forced to use nvidia-legacy. The card is old but it is in the geforce4 range so legacy shouldn't have been necessary. Maybe another member knows if that situation has changed.

What errors pop up if "startx" is entered at the prompt?

For a bit of selfhelp, try entering a search for the exact card model at the mepislovers forum. Even with nvidia, some cards can be more grief than others.

To fix you just re-install x using the live cd that you installed with. With nvidia cards there is a way to install from within MEPIS.
To tell the right way to fix it I need to know which version of MEPIS that you are using. The fix is a bit different for each version.
When you are installing an nvidia driver you have to be sure that the nvidia driver has the same number in it that matches your kernel number. The new versions of MEPIS will do it for you in kmenu/system/MEPIS/MEPIS X Windows Assistant. In 6.5 Rc1 that is where you would find the way to re-install x or upgrade your video driver. What nvidia card do you have? This link will help you to choose which driver that you need.
