Installing Kopete from Synaptic...
I'm trying to install Kopete on my system so I select it from Synaptic and it says

sometimes dependencies are not up to date. if you give it some time, maybe a day or two, this will clear itself
If you want another app to do the job, consider Gaim. If it is IRC that you are thinking about, try Konversation, or XChat.
For your laptop, give DSL a look. Damn Small Linux uses Fluxbox for its window manager. Flux is quite different from KDE, though I prefer it

Well, I've given it a few days, and it seems that in order to resolve this, Ill need to install kdelibs-bin which wants to remove the following:-

Which appears to be the whole KDE! Should I go through with the upgrade, then re-install these when It's been upgraded? I have GNOME aswell, but is this the correct way to go about things?

kde is undergoing a massive upgrade in the repos at the moment and it would NOT be wise to remove those
