Installed Mepis 3.4_rc3: only allows command line login (black screen)

I an trying out various distros; I have installed Mepis in 2004 and liked it; i now have just installed 3.4_rc3 (Jan 23 2006). Everything instlled well and I can boot into it (duall booting WinXP).

Here is my problem, when I boot into it, it gives me a black screen with all the details of what it is loading; as far as I can see there are no errors. then goves me a text login; the problem is I do not know how to get the GUI login. Or is there a command for me to issue before I boot into Mepis???

I suspect this probably has to do with the screen not being recognized. I have DEll 700m laptop with a 1280x800 widescreen; during the installation I found display settings and selected DELL 1280x800 screen, but left screen as 'default"

Could someone help me resolve this please.

Many many thanks,
SL

Soory it was my screen. I reinstalled Mepis this time with VESA settings, it and booted into a GUI. Now I am not sure how to set my screen resolution to make it smooth 1280x800. Do I have to get the 855resoltuion as in suse 10 or ubuntu?

Let me give it a try and will come back if there are problems. Thanks again
SL

I just installed this on an old computer at work..went fairly easy.

Do you have a prompt you can type in or nothing at all?

You could try starting X from the prompt and seeing what happens then. On my install I did I told it to boot command line bc the computer cannot handle KDE..

#apt-get install 855resolution

but it installs the 915resolution.

I tried editing the /etc/default/915resolution file to my my resolution specifications, but nothing happens.

how can i get 855resolution installed either using apt-get or synpatic

Please I am desparate now

If this information helps:

in KDE.control center>Display>size & orientation, the setting for screen option is greyed out; screen size is 1024x768 max; and refresh is set to 70hz (no choice).

Please can anyone help out...

SL
