I can't start mepis after installing a new VGA card
hello everybody,
yesterday i installed an AGP ATI card instead of the built in which came with the computer
when i started MEPIS it showed a logon screen and said if i want the graphical one i should press ctrl+alt+F7 i did that but all what appeared was a blinking cursor
i pressed ctrl+alt+F6 and loged with my user name and password and typed startx
some text appeared which included
no device found
of course the first option was to reinstall mepis but i do not want to do that unless there is an upgrade option that i do not know about and it will save all my installed applications and configurations
so is there any other solution?

Use the live cd. Go to kmenu, system, MEPIS, MEPIS X-Windows assistant. Re-install x and re-boot. That should do it. Then go to the MEPIS assistants and install the latest ati driver. When you are done hit Ctrl/Alt/Backspace to re-start x. If you can't log in normally you will have to use the live cd and re-install x again. If you say which ati card you have then it may be easier to help you.

This is new w/ 6.5.
In 6.0, run MEPIS Utilities: mutilities in a "Run Command" dialog -- K Menu or Alt-F2. The layout is different & maybe most of the functionality is there.
In 3.4-3 & earlier*, it's part of the MEPIS OS Center, command: oscenter. The MEPIS OS Center included the installation utilities, so it was/is easily accessed through the "INSTALL ME" icon.
* I just verified this on 3.3.2 & memory says that it was true of 2004.x, I don't think I ever used any other 3.x, not that it matters much.
