Yeah, SLAX is its own distro (based on Slackware), but the SLAX project does have scripts for (theoretically) making live CDs out of any regular distro:
http://www.linux-live.org/
The problem there is that the kernel needs SquashFS support and the Mepis one doesn't have that by default (as far as I can tell), and I never got past it. The SLAX kernel doesn't work for Debain, so the SLAX SquashFS module also does not work. Here is my own experience trying to get this to work, since I too have created the Worlds Best Distro (TM)

I got further, barely, but I ended up giving up for now.
Until I found this:

which looks promising, but I've not dug into it at all yet. The "problem" with this one is that it uses Debian standard, and I think you build it from the ground up (not sure though), and Mepis isn't *exactly* Debian and may not be set up to be packaged into a live cd. Also, some of Mepis might be closed source (like the great hardware detection and the wonderful MepisOS Center). The MOSCenter could be added with apt but I am not sure how well it would work:

Good luck and if you get this, any of this, to work into making your own live cd, please let us know how you did it!
