How to install Nvidia drivers for Mepis?
Hello all. I am a brand new user to Mepis. I am trying to install the Nvidia drivers for my Geforce 7800GTX PCI-E 256MB card but not sure how to go about it. I have already downloaded the drivers and did the --extract command, but when i try to install it i get something about kernel soure path and so on. I have never dealt with any kernel source before. I did a uname -r and got 2.6.15-1-586tsc Also i wanted to know can i install rpm's on Mepis? I am not if Mephis is debian based or not. Thank you for your time on this matter.
If possible can you be real detailed with your answer, thanks.

sure, this is about as detailed as i can get--(as you grow, you should aquire a nicer bedside manner when posing questions for help)
Mepis is a Debian Distro! It's the only one i have. I have an older Geforce card that i have my own issue's with. Issue's that i can't get an answer for either. hope that helps bro.....

Thanks for the post, but after trying what you put up there i am still without nvidia drivers. This is a real pain in the ass, just to install some video card drivers. I ran and installed what you inform me on but still nothing. I dont get the nvidia splash screen in the beginning. Thank god for windows atleast.

NVidia Drivers
One other thing :
Right click in an empty area of your screen, select Run command
command is kwrite
click Options, mark run as different user, root user, root password
Navigate to
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
You'll find a line in one of the "Device" sections that says
Driver "nv"
Change just that one line t
Driver "nvidia"
Close the file, click on Save, Reboot
If this doesn't work, re-install X from the Mepis Live CD InstallMe as you did before or as explained in the wiki link above http://www.mepislovers-wiki.org/inde..._nvidia_driver

I don't post enough at hlug.org to remember if I use "archtoad6" or my real name. I do much more on the TWiki.
Send me an e-mail via LQ.

hey zippy, yea you have a nice card that use's the latest drivers. i tried both and i don't know what else to do. my old card is a Geforce t1 4200.
when i first installed Mepis 2 months ago, Unreal played very good although at 800x600! i was gonna start twaeking the resolution when Mepis crashed and i re-installed. since then, i could and CAN not figure out how to make Unreal play that fluid again. and yes, i originally used the Mepis install control center.
somewhere along the line, I've done something to Mepis to keep it from playing UT correctly......
i need to flush my drivers and start over, just don't know where to start. i have to go to windoze to play.....
