Hi grimfrog,
I did run Mondo on my Mepis system in the end and created backup CDs.
Having done this, I installed StartCom Linux (a Fedora clone) on my machine to try it out,as it was supposed to be set up for multimedia mainly. I am trying to get midi sequencers and such running on Linux so that is why I tried this.
It wasn't a big success, so I tried to reinstall Mepis from my discs but neither they, nor my original Mepis Live disc would boot properly.
Mandriva 2005, however, booted and installed beautifully with everything working as it should, except for not getting any sound on midi files in Rosegarden (something I have been trying to get sorted for months in many distros). I was able to play midi files in Timidity++ though which is good.
I haven't tried Mondo in Mandriva though, so can't help with that, I'm afraid.
I like Mandriva though I am having a problem with not being able to get Wine or Inkscape to run, but that is for another topic :-)
