How do I install Skype on Mepis?
Hi everybody,
I installed Mepis last night, and I'm very impressed.
It seems quite user friendly, I mean, I haven't screwed up my laptop yet...
I'd like to be able to install Skype, and a couple of programs more, so I can say F*** **f to B. Gates once and for all. I downloaded the installer (it took a while) and saved it on the desktop. I was logged in as root. I pressed the right button on the mouse, and I was given many options, among whom there was 'install'. I clicked it and a window opened for less than half a second. I did it again. And again. And again. Nothing.
I have the same problem with Sea Monkey, after the download I'm not able to use it.
Could anyone help me kicking Wxp out of my Pc, please?
which of the packages did you download?
They are available here http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/
- complete ith installation instructions for each different kind (Mephis should need the Debian package) - follow the istructions and post what you did and what did at which stage not work.
On Debian-like systems you probably need to use eighter the graphical installer utility your distibution provides or the command
dpkg -i <package_name> from the directory where you saved the file.
Look in your distros manual how to install such packages - the above should work.

Please, please clean up the language.
Please, please give more detail on the exact problem---eg "couldn't actually use it". Did you try to run it? Do you know WHERE it installed?
MEPIS 3.4-3 comes preinstalled with skype, I thought, and it works fine (installed MEPIS (again) 2 days ago). Follow this link to set your sound to utilize mixing: http://www.mepislovers-wiki.org/inde...ips_and_tricks
make sure in skype you choose esd as the sound engine
