How do I install Skype on Mepis?
Hi everybody,
I installed Mepis last night, and I'm very impressed. It seems quite user friendly, I mean, I haven't screwed up my laptop yet... I'd like to be able to install Skype, and a couple of programs more, so I can say F*** **f to B. Gates once and for all. I downloaded the installer (it took a while) and saved it on the desktop. I was logged in as root. I pressed the right button on the mouse, and I was given many options, among whom there was 'install'. I clicked it and a window opened for less than half a second. I did it again. And again. And again. Nothing. I have the same problem with Sea Monkey, after the download I'm not able to use it. Could anyone help me kicking Wxp out of my Pc, please? |

They are available here http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/ - complete ith installation instructions for each different kind (Mephis should need the Debian package) - follow the istructions and post what you did and what did at which stage not work. On Debian-like systems you probably need to use eighter the graphical installer utility your distibution provides or the command dpkg -i <package_name> from the directory where you saved the file. Look in your distros manual how to install such packages - the above should work. |
I did download the debian.
I tried the graphic tool. It said I was installing it, but then i couldn't actually use it. Please, please help me saying fuck of to window |

Please, please give more detail on the exact problem---eg "couldn't actually use it". Did you try to run it? Do you know WHERE it installed? |
Skype already installed in MEPIS
K button -> Internet -> More Applications -> Skype
To add or remove software in MEPIS I use Synaptic for a GIU way. It's worth understanding APT for the CLI way as well. NH |
Simplest ever
For my MEPIS 3.4-3 I downloaded the bz2 version and unpacked it as root: bunzip2 skype* and then it worked.
I don't understand tough, how the company can be sold for app 200 mio. USD, when it's freeŽ? |
MEPIS 3.4-3 comes preinstalled with skype, I thought, and it works fine (installed MEPIS (again) 2 days ago). Follow this link to set your sound to utilize mixing: http://www.mepislovers-wiki.org/inde...ips_and_tricks
make sure in skype you choose esd as the sound engine |
